Clinical Examination of Tooth Surface Loss course for Dental Practice
This session describes how to clinically examine a patient with dental erosion. It outlines a systematic approach to examination and covers the clinical signs of dental erosion.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Outline a systematic approach to the clinical examination of a patient presenting with dental erosion
- Describe which tests and records may be helpful in assessing a patient with dental erosion
Clinical examination should be conducted intra-orally and extra-orally and be supported by an up-to-date medical history, diet diary and radiographs of severely worn teeth, where pulpal pathology may have arisen.

Graham’s research interests lie in applied dental materials science and dental erosion. He has published widely in these areas. A particular research interest lies in the measurement and comparison of worn dental surfaces. Techniques developed here have found application in dental restoration and erosion studies as well as in a variety of disciplines outside dentistry.
