Classification of Periodontitis course for Dental Practice
This session describes the current classification of periodontal diseases.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

- Explain the reasons for the most recent changes in terminology
This session will address the current classification system for periodontal diseases and conditions.
The current system was devised at the International Workshop for a Classification of Periodontal Conditions in 1999 and was based upon a scientific review of the literature.

- Periodontal pathogenesis
Anthony is Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry, University of Manchester.
Anthony qualified in 1996 with BDS Honours having also completed an Intercalated Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Physiology in 1993. Following completion of his primary dental degree, he worked in General Dental Practice as a VDP and then in a variety of SHO positions. He was then appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry in 1998 and completed his Fellowship in Dental Surgery in 1999.
Anthony’s main interest within Restorative Dentistry is Periodontology and he embarked on a clinical academic training programme which resulted in completion of his PhD thesis on ‘Microbial Responses to Human Stress Hormones in Periodontal Disease’ in 2006 and his Specialist Training Programme in Restorative Dentistry in 2007. Anthony’s research was awarded the prestigious Sir Wilfred Fish Prize from the British Society of Periodontology in 2006 and, in recognition of his teaching activities, he was awarded the status of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2007 and voted Manchester DDU Dentist Teacher of the Year in 2009.
