Choosing Contraceptive Methods course for Medical Doctors

This session will discuss the principles, practical application and various ways of exploring an individual’s preference when wanting to start or change their method of contraception.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session, learners will be able to:
- 3.2.1 Explore an individual’s preference for contraception
- 3.2.2 Conduct an effective consultation with an individual wishing to start or change her contraceptive method
Choosing a method of contraception can be difficult for an individual because there are several issues to consider, including side-effects and non-contraceptive benefits of the method, social and cultural issues, together with any future pregnancy plans.
Dr Vinod Kumar is a consultant in Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare at Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Leicester. He underwent his specialist clinical training in Community Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CSRH) at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS foundation trust, having previously worked as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) trainee in East Midlands. He received his PhD in protein metabolism from the University of Nottingham in 2010 and has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. He is a member of the Exam Committee of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH). He is a Faculty Registered Trainer (FRT) for Diploma/LoCs and has a special interest in complex contraception.
