This session describes the wide range of changes that occurs following tooth extraction. These include anatomical, aesthetic, functional and psychological changes.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the changes that may occur following tooth loss
  • describe how these changes may be classified

Dental extractions are undertaken for a number of reasons, most commonly because of dental caries and periodontal disease. The extraction of teeth results in a number of changes

Rob Jagger,
Consultant Senior Lecturer, University of Bristol

Rob is a Consultant Senior Lecturer at University of Bristol and United Bristol Hospitals NHS Trust. Until 2005, he was a Reader and Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Cardiff University. He is a former President of the British Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry and the European Academy of Craniomandibular Disorders.

His clinical interests are the management of difficult denture patients and temporomandibular disorders. He is the author of three books and more than eighty articles in refereed journals.
