Gain the skills to assist allied health professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists and specialist allied health professionals) assisting with the care and implementation of healthcare plans or therapy programs to support the care of patients.   

During this course, you will learn how to work with children, adults, and older people with a range of medical issues and treatment plans.  

Students will learn medical terminology, how to recognise healthy body systems, and study the impact of health conditions.  A comprehensive program in working as a vital member of a medical team, communicating at the highest level and with empathy, understanding patient care, and diversity, and supporting a health professional in all aspects of clinical practice.   Develop the skills and knowledge to maintain stock levels of supplies, consumables and equipment.

You will gain the skills and knowledge required to support people who require assistance with basic physical movement which may be due to incapacity.  This is ideal for supporting a range of allied health professionals and supporting patients needing support and assistance in their therapy regime in a range of situations including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and aged care.

Students will study in-depth what is required to Assist with an allied health program –  supporting industry Healthcare Professionals in their workload.  

To support these endeavors, Wesley includes critical key skills such as basic Medical Software Training (for data entry);  Keyboarding Skills, Patient Records, and touching on the Australian Health Care System and understanding basic medical billing protocols for a complete education in Healthcare.

Work Placement and working within the Australian Health System

You will be required to undertake 80 hours of practical work placement which can be undertaken either full time or part-time.

During your year of study you will be learning how to work within the Australian state health system with particular emphasis on:

  • Relevant medical terminology — so you can accurately follow instructions from medical professionals.
  • Basic anatomy and physiology — so you can recognise and promote healthy body systems.
  • Infection prevention and control — so you can minimise the transfer of germs, infections, and disease.
  • Advanced Patient-Centred communication – so you can support patient’s in their care and become an effective medical team member
  • Allied health programs — so you can follow a treatment plan under the supervision of an Allied Health Professional.

Possible job roles
Allied Health Assistants often work with various health professionals when coordinating a treatment plan, but you may also be employed as an assistant within a single medical profession.   Possible job roles include:
