This session will discuss the development of ceramic restorations. It will also discuss the different types of ceramics and how they can be optimally bonded to tooth structure.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the developments in materials used for ceramic restorations
  • List the different types of ceramic restorations
  • State how a ceramic surface can be treated prior to bonding

This session will make you aware of how ceramic restorations were developed, the types of ceramics used for all-ceramic restorations and how these restorations can be bonded to tooth structure.

Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry

Richard qualified from the University of Manchester in 1989.

After eight years in general practice, he was awarded a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship in 1998 and entered the Graduate Program in Prosthodontics at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Richard graduated with a PhD in 2003 and returned to London to take up a clinical teaching position at King’s College London Dental Institute and as a Dental Practitioner for Tower Hamlets PCT. He was a Vocational Dental Trainer for one year and obtained the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004.

Richard completed Specialist training in Restorative Dentistry, including Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Endodontics at Guy’s Hospital and obtained the Intercollegiate Speciality Fellowship examination in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2014.

Richard is currently a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at King’s College London Dental Institute. He has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, several book chapters and two books and is an Associate Editor of Journal of Prosthodontic Research, Official Journal of Japan Prosthodontic Society.
