Cardiac Nursing

This unit of study is designed to explore issues specific to nursing practice in the cardiac critical care setting. Topics explored in this unit of study include: advanced cardiopulmonary support, heart failure, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, advanced cardiac pharmacology, valvular heart disease, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, surgical management of heart disease and secondary prevention strategies.

Hours of Study: 150
Credit points : 6
Students are required to be working in an area that has critical care cardiac patients.
Single unit only available for graduates of Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing or equivalent.
Theme 1: Heart disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus
Review the incidence and complexity of cardiovascular disorders associated with modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors and related metabolic comorbidities.
Theme 2: Valvular heart disease
Discuss the importance of focused assessment, continuous haemodynamic monitoring and advanced cardiovascular support.
Theme 3: Advanced cardiac pharmacology
Evaluate surgical, interventional and pharmacological management of coronary vasculature, conductive system and valvular disorders.
Theme 4: Diagnostic cardiology
Critically appraise health education protocols, secondary prevention strategies and subsequent palliation of chronic cardiovascular pathophysiology.
Theme 5: Interventional cardiology & surgical management of heart disease
Analyse multi-disciplinary care objectives inclusive of disability, mental health and cultural safety dimensions in complex clinical situations.
Theme 6: Heart failure
Critically reflect on own practice and the need to maintain a cohesive, coordinated and high-functioning cardiovascular care team.
