This session provides an overview of some of the clinically important cardiac arrhythmias you may come across as a dental practitioner.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the cardiac conduction system
  • Interpret ECGs of different types of cardiac arrhythmia
  • List the cardiac arrhythmias that may present in dental practice
  • Recognise the impact of cardiac arrhythmias on the provision of dental care
  • Recommend methods of treating cardiac arrhythmias

Cardiac arrhythmias are important causes of morbidity and mortality.

In this session, we will outline the basic principles of cardiac arrhythmias and provide a brief overview of ECG interpretation.

Pav Sarai MBBS BSc (Hons) MRCP,
Specialty Anaesthetic Registrar, Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust

Dr Sarai qualified in 2008 from Royal Free University College London Medical School. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology from University College London University in 2005.

Since qualification, Dr. Sarai has been working with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Faculty of Dentistry as a tutor and examiner on their FDS and MJDF courses. In 2011 his contribution to the college was recognised with a Honorary Lectureship.

In 2011 he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Dr. Sarai currently works within the Central London School of Anaesthesia as a Specialty Registrar.

Ros Perring MBBS BSc (Hons) MRCP,
Specialty Trainee, Anaesthetics, Imperial College Hospitals Trust

Dr Ros Perring qualified in 2010 from St. George’s Hospital Medical School. In 2005, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Manchester.

In 2013 she became a member of the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Dr. Perring currently works within the North West London School of Anaesthesia.
