Calcium and Bone Metabolism Disorders in Primary Care course for GPs
This session looks at the common presentations of calcium and bone metabolic disorders and outlines a rational approach to their investigation.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the common and important causes of hypercalcaemia
- Describe a systematic approach to the investigation of hypercalcaemia in primary care
- Describe how common bone metabolism disorders present in primary care
- Describe the investigation and management of common bone metabolism disorders
- Recognise the clinical features of vitamin D deficiency
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body; 99% of the body’s calcium is found in the skeleton.
Yehani is a 4th year Specialist Registrar and an academic clinical fellow in Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. She is involved in clinical authorisation of results from the biochemistry lab, providing advice to general practitioners on clinical biochemistry results and also carries out clinics in obesity, lipids and metabolic bone disease.
Yehani completed the MRCP(UK) exams in 2005 and also completed an MSc in Clinical Biochemistry at University College, London in 2009. She has a special interest in metabolic bone disease and in renin mass methods in the investigation of primary hyperaldosteronism.
Yehani is currently doing the final part of the FRCPath exams in Clinical Biochemistry and pursuing a research project for this.
