Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • name all the components of bridges
  • identify and describe the different types of bridges currently in use

A bridge is a prosthetic appliance that replaces a missing tooth or teeth and is fixed to the remaining teeth. Until the advent of successful dental implants they were the method of choice for tooth replacement in healthy mouths. Careful planning is required for these restorations to be successful in the long term. A bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture (FPD), remains the only other fixed replacement for teeth when implants are not possible.
