Behavioural management techniques in the anxious patient course for Dental Practitioners



This session describes what is meant by the term ‘behavioural management’ and identifies some behavioural management techniques used for the dental patient. The advantages and disadvantages of specific behavioural management techniques will be presented.

By the end of this session you will be able to:
- define what is meant by the term 'behavioural management'
- describe some behavioural management techniques appropriate for dental patients
- discuss the advantages and disadvantages of specific behavioural management techniques
Safe and effective dental treatment, particularly for the anxious patient, often requires modification of the patient’s behaviour.


Dr Kathy Wilson is an Associate Specialist in Dental Sedation at Newcastle Dental Hospital.
Currently lecturing in the field of dental sedation and special care dentistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Kathy has extensive clinical experience in management of the anxious dental patient.
Kathy is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, and is Module Editor for Module 3 Anxiety and Pain Control in Dentistry.
