Barrier Contraceptives course
This session will discuss barrier methods of contraception, including their efficacy, advantages and disadvantages. It also explores how to undertake a consultation with an individual considering barrier methods of contraception, including counselling, information-giving and practical aspects.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- 3.7.1 List the barrier methods currently available in the UK
- 3.7.2 List the advantages and disadvantages of barrier methods
- 3.7.3 List contraindications to the use of barrier methods
- 3.7.4 Conduct an effective consultation with a person considering barrier methods
- 3.7.5 Teach correct use of male/external condoms
Used for thousands of years, barrier methods are some of the oldest forms of contraception. Their primary action is to form a physical barrier to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. They can also provide protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Andrew graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2009 with a Bachelor of Nursing. He began his career in sexual health in 2011 at Mortimer Market Centre. Throughout his career he has developed skills in contraception and genitourinary medicine, including the FSRH Diploma (DFSRH) and LOCs in for Subdermal Implants and IUC insertion. Andrew completed his Advanced Practice MSc in 2019.
Andrew currently works as a Nurse Practitioner in sexual health services within the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Foundation Trust.
