Audiometry Nursing

This unit of study is designed to facilitate the development of the audiometry nurse’s understanding of the hearing process and client assessment. Content covered within this unit of study includes the anatomy, physiology and pathology of hearing, alterations to hearing, assessment and monitoring hearing. The unit of study is designed to meet the needs of audiometry nurses working within a variety of settings and caring for clients across the lifespan.

Theme 1: Audiometry systems
Describe the normal anatomy and physiology of hearing
Theme 2: Pathologies of the ear
Describe the physics of sound
Theme 3: Equipment and standards
Demonstrate an understanding of normal child cognitive, speech and language development
Theme 4: Screening
Identify risk factors for hearing loss along the age continuum
Theme 5: Clinical assessment
Discuss the pathology associated with types of hearing loss
Theme 6: Management of hearing loss
Identify standards governing, and equipment used in hearing assessments (including maintenance)
Theme 7: Hearing devices and support
- Discuss screening techniques
- Describe a thorough clinical hearing assessment on a client and interpret results appropriately
- Develop a holistic approach to the management of clients with a hearing loss
