Assessment of Pain in Older Adults course
This session describes the assessment of pain in older adults and the range of assessment tools available for clinicians to use.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify the factors to take into account when assessing pain in older adults
- List the differences between acute and chronic pain
- Select appropriate assessment tools for assessing pain symptoms in older adults
Because many older adults are unable to articulate their pain, they may not receive the treatment that they need. Therefore, health workers must be aware, receptive and creative in their approaches to meeting the care needs of potentially vulnerable older adults.
Pat trained at Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital and worked as a specialist pain nurse for many years before completing her PhD and moving into academia.
She is chair of both the British Pain Society – Pain in Older Adults, Special Interest Group (SIG) and the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Subcommittee on Education (Pain in Older Adults SIG).
Her special interests are pain, ageing and dementia. She has published and is involved with a number of research projects in the area of improving the management of pain in adults with dementia. Pat is also joint editor of the Journal of Pain Management.
Pat is a module editor and author on the e-PAIN project.
