This session describes how to appraise the various types of information that are available to dentists and their teams, and to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the different types of information.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify different sources of information
  • Evaluate the quality of different sources of information
  • Use different methods and guidelines to critically appraise scientific literature

All clinicians need to acquire skills in critically appraising all aspects of their professional life.

This means taking one step back and objectively appraising the rationale for every aspect of practice to try to ensure that actions are based on logic and science rather than emotion, hearsay and past habits.

Professor Kenneth Eaton PhD, MSc, BDS, FFGDP(UK), MGDS RCS (Eng), LDS RCS (Eng), FFPH, FHEA, FICD, DHC has worked in all areas of dentistry. He is listed by the GDC as a specialist in Periodontics and Dental Public Health. He is a Visiting Professor at the University College London, Eastman, King’s College London Dental Institutes and the University of Leeds and is an Honorary Professor at the University of Kent.
