Applying Knowledge and Evidence course for Dental Practice
This session will support you in gathering information to produce an evidence-based challenge to systems and processes, in order to identify opportunities for service improvements.
Learning Objectives
This session will support you to:
- Use appropriate methods to gather data and information
- Carry out analysis against an evidence based criteria set
- Use information to challenge existing practices and processes
- Influence others to use knowledge and evidence to achieve best practice
It is important when investigating any topic that healthcare professionals know how to source credible information and determine the validity of the evidence on which they base their practice.
Before commencing this session you should:
- Familiarise yourself with what data sets are routinely collected within your organisation (i.e. audits, targets, league tables, quality dashboards, incident reporting)

Abigail Hine (BSc MBBS FRCA) is an Anaesthetic Registrar currently undertaking a management and leadership fellowship at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. She has particular interests in systems design and patient safety. In 2012 Abigail completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Leadership and Service Improvement.
Julie Burden (Dip COT SROT) is a Paediatric Occupational Therapist by background. For the last five years she has been the Deputy Manager for Adult Occupational Therapy and the Warwickshire Wheelchair Services across acute, rehabilitation and community settings at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust. She has taken a leadership role in service redesign across integrated paediatric services, Stroke pathway development and combining wheelchair services. In 2012 Julie completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Leadership and Service Improvement.
