Anaesthetic Nursing

This unit of study is designed for nurses with foundational knowledge and skills in anaesthetic nursing. It facilitates consolidation and expansion of existing knowledge within the speciality of anaesthetic nursing. Students will examine the role of the anaesthetic nurse and use professional perioperative standards, guidelines and research to inform a systematic approach to nursing assessment and management.

Theme 1: Pre-procedural nursing assessment
Appraise the role of the anaesthetic nurse in optimising person-centred outcomes in the perioperative environment.
Theme 2: Anaesthesia delivery
Conceptualise the systematic assessment processes in the pre and intra- operative phases of care.
Theme 3: Anaesthesia monitoring
Critically reflect on the advanced knowledge and skills required to provide a safe environment during anaesthesia.
Theme 4: General anaesthesia and pharmacology
Evaluate the evidence-based nursing care required to meet the physical and psychological needs of an individual undergoing anaesthesia.
