Resuscitation and Treatment
Session Overview
Description
This session describes the initial resuscitation for the patient with sepsis and septic shock. It focuses on the resuscitation and initial cardiovascular management of sepsis.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain how to initiate management of patients with severe sepsis
  • Assess response to this first step
  • Identify patients who may need more invasive support and vasoactive drugs

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete:

  • Venous Blood Gases Analysis (001-0261)
  • Definitions of Sepsis (001-0327)
  • Pathophysiology of Sepsis and MOF (001-0328)
  • Assessment and Differential Diagnosis of Sepsis (001-0336)

Sepsis is a medical emergency.

Timely intervention with appropriate, simple measures has been shown to reduce mortality in this syndrome with high in-hospital mortality.

The approach that is explained in this session has been used by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign [1](read details regarding the reference) and Survive Sepsis UK [2](read details regarding the reference). This has been incorporated into a number of 'bundles'.

The concept of bundles as an improvement tool is also discussed.
