A Structured Approach to the Critically-ill Patient
Session Overview
Description
This session introduces critical care medicine, provides a structured approach to clinical management and introduces some commonly used terminology.

Session Introduction
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Give an overview of organ support in critical care
  • Explain the problem-based approach for the critically-ill patient
  • List commonly used terminology in organ support
  • Give examples of ethical aspects of organ support

Many intensive care patients have complex disease processes, often on a background of multiple pre-existing pathologies.

A problem-based approach is used to analyze what is happening, looking at one organ system at a time, and then integrating the information to make a management plan.
