Management of Neurological and Neuromuscular Diseases: GBS, MG, MND, CIPN, CIPM, Parkinson's
Session Overview
Description
This session describes the management of patients admitted to critical care with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, motor neurone disease, myasthenia gravis, critical illness polyneuropathy, critical illness neuromyopathy and Parkinson's disease.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Define GBS, MG, MND, CIPN, CIPM and Parkinson's
- List the clinical features of GBS, MG, MND, CIPN, CIPM and Parkinson's
- Describe the indications for critical care admission for GBS, MG, MND, CIPN, CIPM and Parkinson's
- Describe critical care management for GBS, MG, MND, CIPN, CIPM and Parkinson's
Prerequisites
- Before commencing this session you should complete:
- Action Potential, NMJ and Skeletal Muscle Contraction (001-0629)
- Autonomic Nervous System (001-0676)
- The Neuromuscular Junction & the Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor (001-0779)
Early critical care involvement can have a significant improvement in outcome for patients with acute neurological and neuromuscular conditions.
However, these patients can remain dependent on critical care support for a prolonged period of time. This can result in significant demands on the patient, as well as on nursing, medical and other healthcare professionals involved.
Knowledge of a range neurological and neuromuscular conditions is essential for critical care clinicians.
