Session Overview
Description
This session examines how and why acute pain services came into existence by exploring antecedents and important landmarks. It also looks at their organization and explains how this helps to support its objectives. Challenges that the services face now and in the future are also addressed.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the organizational structure of a typical acute pain service
  • Explain the key objectives of an acute pain service
  • Outline some of the challenges that lie ahead for acute pain services
  • Outline the RADAR approach to acute pain management

Acute pain services perform an important role in safeguarding effective pain relief for hospital in-patients with acute pain, most commonly post-surgery.

As a multidisciplinary team acute pain services are involved in assessment, drug delivery, education, training and establishing guidelines.

This session traces the history of acute pain services and details the organization and objectives of such services.
