Anaesthesia | Paediatrics | Inguinal Block
Inguinal Block
Session Overview
Description
This session provides information about the inguinal block in terms of its contraindications, possible complications and the relevant anatomy. It also discusses the performance of landmark and ultrasound techniques.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the indications for inguinal nerve blockade
- List the contraindications to inguinal nerve blockade
- List the complications of inguinal nerve blockade
- Outline the anatomy of the inguinal region
- Outline the basic principles behind the landmark and ultrasound (US) techniques for an inguinal nerve block
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete the following:
- Module 4b/Analgesia/Safety and Treatment Of LA Toxicity In Children (001-0440)
The ilioinguinal nerve block is one of the most common blocks performed. It is considered to be effective and safe. However, even when standard landmark approaches to this nerve block are strictly followed, the failure rate has been reported to be as high as 78%.
The way most anaesthetists overcome this is by using a saturation bombing technique (i.e. a large volume of local anaesthetic (LA) injected in all directions).
This session aims to help you to perform this block with greater finesse. To achieve this, this session reviews:
- When to use the ilioinguinal nerve block
- Relative and absolute contraindications
- Possible complications
- The anatomy of the inguinal region
- The performance of landmark and US techniques
