Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define a controlled ventilation technique for the maintenance of general anaesthesia
  • List suitable devices for airway maintenance when using a controlled technique
  • Identify clinical circumstances in which a controlled ventilation technique is appropriate for maintenance of general anaesthesia in children
  • Describe the principles of conduct of intermittent positive pressure ventilation in children
  • Identify which monitors are essential for controlled ventilation
  • Describe the characteristics of an ideal paediatric ventilator
  • Demonstrate this knowledge when anaesthetizing paediatric patients of all ages

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have a good knowledge of:

  • Paediatric anatomy and physiology relevant to anaesthesia (including neonates)
  • Anaesthetic equipment
  • Maintenance of the airway during anaesthesia
  • Induction of anaesthesia
  • Monitoring
