Session Overview
Description
Part 1 of this session discusses normal body fluid composition and how this changes with age and normal maintenance fluid requirements. It also looks at the diagnosis and correction of fluid deficits. Part 2 of the session looks at the diagnosis and correction of common electrolyte abnormalities.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Calculate normal maintenance fluid requirements
- Diagnose any fluid deficits
- Calculate blood volume depending on a child’s age and weight
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete the following:
- 02_33_01 Intraoperative Analgesia
- 02_33_02 Overview of Intravenous Fluids
- 02_33_03 Principles of Red Cell Transfusion
- 02_33_04 Management of Massive Haemorrhage
This session will provide you with the information you need in order to safely administer fluids to children and so reduce the risk of unnecessary deaths such as these. You will learn about:
