Burns
Session Overview
Description
This session will lead the participant through a scenario from the first presentation to the stabilization of a child with burns.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Assess the extent of injury to a child with a burn injury
  • Initiate appropriate and immediate management
  • List the ongoing circulatory requirements
  • Identify when the patient should be referred to a specialist centre

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:

  • A knowledge of paediatric basic life support and paediatric advanced life support

Burn injuries in children are not uncommon. Thankfully, most of these are minor (<10% body surface area) and the majority of these injured children recover well. In the case of major burns however the outcome is not always assured. They are often associated with other traumatic injuries such as smoke inhalation and sepsis.

Even if the child recovers from the initial insult, they often require input from the multidisciplinary team for a considerable time, as many attend for rehabilitation, physiotherapy, further reconstructive surgery, and psychological input.
