Session Overview
Description
This session will look at the pleura, the pleural spaces and common pathologies that affect them. The anatomy and physiology of the pleural cavities will also be reviewed. Emphasis will be placed upon the radiographic appearances of some of the common and important pathologies.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy of the pleura and pleural cavities
  • Describe the common and important pathologies which affect the pleura and pleural spaces
  • Appreciate how the physiology of the pleural cavities affects the imaging appearances of the pathologies

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete:

  • Image Interpretation - Plain X-rays of the Adult Chest: Introduction
  • Image Interpretation - Plain X-rays of the Adult Chest: General Anatomy and Physiology
  • Image Interpretation - Plain X-rays of the Adult Chest: The Normal Chest X-ray

Pleural pathologies are easy to overlook on chest radiographs, however, subtle abnormalities can be clinically important and as such care must be taken to carefully assess the pleura on each chest radiograph reviewed.

This session will provide a broad overview of some of the important and common pathologies encountered.
