Description
This session covers the indications for central venous catheterization as well as sites of access. It also covers both short- and long-term complication of CVCs.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the various indications for central venous access in the critical care setting
  • List the potential options for central venous access sites
  • Describe the different options for central venous access and indications for each type
  • Describe the short- and longer-term complications of central venous access

Central venous catheterization (CVC) is an important tool in the critical care setting. It is used for a variety of both diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Competent practice in the various methods is essential for the critical care practitioner.

This session discusses the sites, options and various indications for central venous access, along with their associated complications.
