Anaesthesia Fundamentals | Physiology | Hormonal and Metabolic Regulation of Cardiac Function
Hormonal and Metabolic Regulation of Cardiac Function
Session Overview
Description
This session provides an outline of the key hormonal and metabolic factors that regulate cardiac function.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain how intrinsic circulatory hormones affect cardiac function
- Explain the role of atrial natriuretic peptide and brain natriuretic peptide on cardiac function
- Describe the key metabolic factors which regulate cardiac function
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete:
- Regulation of Cardiac Function (001-0642)
- Biophysical Regulation of Cardiac Function (001-0643)
Hormonal and metabolic factors play an integral part in the regulation of cardiac function predominantly through their effects on heart rate, stroke volume and vascular resistance. Hormones in particular have an influence on the autonomic control of cardiac function.
