Anaesthesia Fundamentals | Physiology | Gaseous Exchange: Hyper- and Hypo-Baric Pressures
Gaseous Exchange: Hyper- and Hypo-Baric Pressures
Session Overview
Description
This session introduces you to the physiological effects of altitude and the adaptations that occur with acclimatization. It also introduces the pathology and physiology of high pressure and decompression.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain the scale and effects of low inspired oxygen partial pressure at altitude
- List the features of altitude-related illness
- Describe the physiology and pathology of increased pressure during diving and hyperbaric therapy
- Describe the relevance of variation in ambient pressure to the anaesthetist
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete the following sessions:
- Gaseous exchange: oxygen (001-0660)
- Gaseous exchange: hypoxia and hyper- and hypo-capnia (001-0661)
This session will give you an understanding of hypobaric and hyperbaroic pressures. As an anaesthetist, it is important that you know the relevance of these to anaesthesia.
