Anaesthesia Fundamentals | Physiology | Functions of Nerve Cells 1
Functions of Nerve Cells 1
Session Overview
Description
This session describes the physiology of the action potential, and how it is generated and conducted along nerves.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify how an action potential is generated in terms of ionic changes across a membrane
- Evaluate the concept of ‘membrane potential’
- Describe basic conduction in neurones
The human body contains approximately one trillion neurones. The nervous system has evolved to conduct information and to integrate it to produce an effect.
This session covers the way in which neurones are excited and conduct impulses.
