The Globe of the Eye
Session Overview
Description
Applied anatomy of the eyeball and its contents. This session describes the main layers of the eye and explains their composition and function. It also looks at some common pathological ocular conditions.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the three separate layers of the eye and define their constituent parts
  • Identify the site of production and route of flow of aqueous humour through the eye
  • Describe the nature and anatomical relationships of vitreous humour, lens and aqueous humour
  • Identify a normal optic disc
  • Discuss how the above relate to common pathological ocular conditions

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:

  • Knowledge of the orbit and contents would be advisable.

The human eye is an incredibly beautiful and fascinating organ. In its natural, healthy state it transforms the energy of reflected light into neural impulses that the brain processes and we enjoy as colour vision.

In this session, you will learn about the component parts of the eye that facilitate this process and become familiar with the function of the different parts.

As you proceed through the session, you will see how pathology in some of these structures can lead to common forms of visual loss.

This session will include some questions to test your knowledge.
