Microstructure of the Lungs and Pleura
Session Overview
Description
This session will cover the structure of the lungs and pleura at a cellular level. In particular there will be an emphasis on the structure and function relationships which allow gas exchange to occur.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the development of the lungs and pleura
  • Distinguish between the different parts of the respiratory tree by the tissue structure
  • List the epithelial cell types in the lung
  • Discuss the alveolar structure in relation to its function

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete the following session:

  • Module 07a/Respiratory system/Trachea, main bronchi, broncho-pulmonary segments (001-0557)

Gas exchange is fundamental to human life. The lungs and pleura are essential organs which allow this to occur. Detailed knowledge of the microstructure of the lungs is essential to understand both normal function and the pathology of disease. Application of this knowledge to your clinical practice will enable you to develop the skill required for management of patients with respiratory disease.

Lung structure is a fascinating example of tissue which has developed in order to fulfil a specialized function.

This session will look at the structure of the airways, lung tissue and pleura at a cellular level. Structure and functional relationships will be examined.
