Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic, autoimmune inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology mainly involving joints but also with systemic effects. These extra-articular manifestations occur in more than 50% of patients. Both the articular and systemic manifestations have important anaesthetic implications. This session describes the clinical features and perioperative management of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
