Sexual exploitation is thought to affect thousands of children and young people each year and can have enormous long-term consequences on the way these children and young people feel about themselves.

Health professionals have an important role to play in recognising the indicators or sexual exploitation, supporting forensic examinations and knowing when to refer a situation to the police and children's social care.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the role of health professionals in the management of a child or young person following a suspected sexual assault
  • review a young person's capacity to understand and give consent to assessment and information sharing
  • identify the indicators which suggest that a child or young person is at risk of sexual exploitation
  • list the short-term and long-term outcomes of abuse and identify some of the factors that may influence these
