This session will cover the necessary equipment, safe titration and ideal end point for outpatient dental sedation with midazolam.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the equipment required for intravenous sedation
  • explain the basic principles of safe drug titration
  • describe how to administer intravenous sedation to a dental patient, along with the recovery and discharge process for patients receiving intravenous sedation
  • describe how to manage intravenous sedation related complications

Careful titration of midazolam via secure venous access is essential to minimise the risk the patient.

Risk is further reduced by stringent clinical and electromechanical monitoring, immediate access to emergency equipment and the reversal agent flumazenil.

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • the anatomy relevant to conscious sedation in dental practice
  • cardiovascular physiology relevant to conscious sedation
  • respiratory physiology relevant to conscious sedation
  • the principles of intravenous cannulation
  • the principles of intravenous sedation
