Safe Sedation
Session Overview
Description
In order to practise safe sedation, the guidelines recommended by the Royal College of Anaesthetists must be followed. Use this short session to revise and test your knowledge of safe sedation in postoperative confusion.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the principles of safe sedation in postoperative confusion
Sedation makes unpleasant healthcare procedures acceptable to patients. However, sedation techniques have the potential to cause life-threatening complications, particularly in the presence of disease or old age. In order to avoid exposing patients to unnecessary risk, safe sedation guidelines must be followed.
This session explores the safe sedation principles recommended by the Royal College of Anaesthetists in the context of postoperative confusion [1].
This session contains three questions, each presenting a different patient. You must use your knowledge of safe sedation to identify the correct action to take to help them. The principles that underlie the correct action will then be explained.
