This session covers liver disease in pregnancy including preconception care and maternal health during pregnancy and postpartum.

At the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • explain the normal physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and how this correlates to symptoms, signs and results
  • understand the important considerations of preconception care and how this can impact on a healthy pregnancy; in the context of liver disease this includes hepatitis B and C
  • develop a systematic approach to acute problems that may develop during pregnancy or postpartum
  • recognise the features and symptoms of concern in a pregnant woman in the context of liver disease to develop the basic knowledge of how to treat and escalate a woman, as appropriate: 
    • intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy
    • acute fatty liver of pregnancy
    • HELLP syndrome
