Description
This session covers the investigation and management of a patient presenting with dysuria.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Recall the anatomy of the genitourinary tract
- Explain the pathophysiology of infective causes of urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Outline the principles of management of UTI
- Identify general measures to prevent recurrent UTI
Dysuria is a common symptom, affecting around a quarter of adult women each year and is defined by a burning or stinging sensation on urination. The most common cause in adult women is a lower UTI. There are also other important causes of dysuria, especially in men, which are highlighted in the session Causes of Dysuria (003-0116). This session will concentrate on the investigation and management of UTI in women and men.
