This session covers the presentation, investigation and management of jaundice in the acute setting.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology of jaundice
- List the commonly encountered causes of jaundice
- Identify the salient points in a medical history and examination relating to jaundice
- Recall appropriate investigations for patients with jaundice in the acute medical setting
- Outline the steps for the immediate assessment and management of three life-threatening clinical presentations associated with jaundice
Jaundice is a common presenting symptom encountered in the acute medical setting. There is a very broad spectrum of medical conditions that may present with or be associated with jaundice.
This session covers the key challenges facing physicians, including:
- Diagnosing the underlying aetiology
- Identifying patients in whom jaundice is associated with a life-threatening illness
