  • List the commonly encountered causes of jaundice
  • Identify the salient points in a medical history and examination relating to jaundice
  • Recall appropriate investigations for patients with jaundice in the acute medical setting
  • Outline the steps for the immediate assessment and management of three life-threatening clinical presentations associated with jaundice

Jaundice is a common presenting symptom encountered in the acute medical setting. There is a very broad spectrum of medical conditions that may present with or be associated with jaundice.

This session covers the key challenges facing physicians, including:

  • Diagnosing the underlying aetiology
  • Identifying patients in whom jaundice is associated with a life-threatening illness
  • Managing such patients in a timely and effective manner
