Parkinsonism
Session Overview
Description
This session revises the typical features and differential diagnoses of parkinsonism.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the differential diagnoses of parkinsonism

Parkinsonism is defined as clinical features that are present in Parkinson’s disease (PD).

This should include bradykinesia and at least one of:

  • Tremor
  • Rigidity
  • Postural instability

Clearly, the commonest cause of parkinsonism is idiopathic PD, but there are several differential diagnoses with alternative aetiologies.

These diagnoses can be classified in different ways. This session tries to split the causes of parkinsonism based on the presence of other key clinical features.
