This session lists the drugs that can commonly cause hyponatraemia. It also gives sources of further information if less common drug causes are suspected.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the drugs that commonly cause hyponatraemia

Many drugs can cause a low plasma sodium level. This is most likely when the drug is first started, but can occur at any time during treatment.

This session highlights the drugs commonly used in clinical practice that can cause hyponatraemia.

They are considered in two groups:

  • Drugs that probably act by causing the syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone secretion (SIADH )
  • Diuretics
