Investigation and Management of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
Session Overview
Description
This session covers the investigation, assessment and management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List necessary investigations in the assessment of a new patient with HCM
- Assess the risk of sudden cardiac death in patients with HCM
- Describe the principles of drug and device therapy in HCM
- Discuss the role of genetic counselling and testing
- Describe the management of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, including pharmacological and invasive strategies
- Describe the management of other complications of HCM such as atrial arrhythmias, thromboembolic events and deteriorating left ventricular function
This session aims to ensure the trainee will be confident in the approach to the patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
It begins by focusing on the necessary investigations for assessment of the new patient with a family history of cardiomyopathy.
It moves on to the assessment and management of risk in a patient confirmed to have the disease, covering the use of genetic screening and management strategies for the treatment of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.
