Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- State the determinants of pH according to the strong ion theory
The traditional theory for understanding acid-base balance within humans, both in health and disease, is based upon the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, derived in 1916.
In 1981, Peter Stewart published an alternative theory, the strong ion theory, based on the law of electrochemical neutrality [1].
