Accountability in Healthcare Organisations course for GPs
This session examines how and why NHS organisations are structured to achieve their goals. It explores the rationale behind different types of organisational structures and roles and the contribution clinicians can make to leadership and management.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify common types of organisational structure and examine how structures have changed in recent years to reflect changes in society, technology, organisational goals and best practice
- Critique different types of NHS organisation in terms of their organisation structure
- Identify the various functions and processes associated with managing an NHS organisation
- Consider the role of clinicians within the management process and the impact this can have on the overall performance of the organisation
- Demonstrate your contribution to the development of leadership by identifying how and where key organisational decisions are made
It is vital that clinicians understand the political, social, technical, economic, organisational and professional environment in which they work.
Before commencing this session you should complete these sessions in the Introductory Module:

Vivian Tang is a General Practice specialty registrar in South East London. She graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Schools of Medicine, London in 2006. During her medical degree she gained an intercalated BSc in Psychology and Basic Medical Sciences from King’s College London and is currently enrolled in a Doctorate of Medicine at King’s College London.
In 2008, Vivian took a break from her clinical training and was seconded as a clinical advisor to the medical director of the Medical Director of the National Patient Safety Agency as part of the Chief Medical Officer’s Clinical Advisors’ Scheme. In addition, she has been spending a proportion of her time working for the World Health Organisation’s Patient Safety Programme.
Sukhmeet Panesar is an e-LfH author working in the LeAD project: Clinical and Medical Leadership
Penny has a varied background combining a clinical profession with higher education, research, and service general management. Recently she has been working with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges on the Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project, including contributing to establishing the Medical Leadership Competency Framework, and specifically taking a lead for post graduate training. Penny is the Clinical Lead for the e-learning programme LeAD, both for medical leadership (through the AoMRC) and for clinical leadership (through the NHS Leadership Academy, and previously the National Leadership Council).
Posts in the NHS have included: Policy Lead in a Strategic Health Authority for leadership and diversity; Service General Manager for quality and education in an NHS Trust; and research supervisor and module leader for the multi-disciplinary MSc in Healthcare at the University of Exeter. Penny was Associate Lecturer in the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry Graduate School, specifically teaching on M.Ed. in Clinical Education, and Professional Skills for specialist registrars. Now working on a freelance basis, Penny has been offering training, facilitation and coaching to the public sector, especially senior staff and teams in healthcare.
