Pituitary problems in primary care (including hyperprolactinaemia)
Session Overview
Description
The session looks at the pituitary gland and associated disorders. Prolactinomas and associated symptoms are covered, along with the pathophysiology of pituitary insufficiency and its investigation and management.

This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in May 2021.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the presentation and common causes of hyperprolactinaemia
  • describe common presentations of both secreting and non-secreting pituitary adenomas
  • describe the presentation of growth hormone disorders such as growth hormone deficiency and acromegaly
  • outline the significance of postpartum pituitary insufficiency.

This session explores some of the key issues in relation to the diagnosis and investigation of functional and non-functional pituitary tumours in the primary care setting.

In particular, the session will cover symptoms and signs of pituitary insufficiency and its investigation and management.

A number of case studies are used to illustrate how patients may present to a primary care practitioner. The investigations and management of prolactinomas are looked at in particular detail.

By the end of this session you should have a sound understanding of what you need to do when taking a history and what to look for on examination.
