The most frequent reason for radiography referral in children is a chest infection.

Feverish illness is very common in young children, with between 20 and 40% of parents reporting such an illness each year. As a result, fever is probably the commonest reason for a child to be taken to the doctor. Feverish illness is also the second most common reason for a child being admitted to hospital. Despite advances in healthcare, infections remain the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 years [1](read details regarding the reference).

This session discusses the radiographic appearances of infections most commonly encountered amongst paediatrics. The session is one of two infection-related sessions. This first session will focus on providing an overview of anatomy and functionality of the paediatric chest, as well as key radiographic appearances of chest infections. The second session focuses on a variety of specific chest infections and the commonly associated radiographic patterns and appearances encountered with each.
