Session Overview
Description
This session will cover the natural history, clinical presentation and management of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in adults, excluding infection refractory to treatment.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the predisposing factors for, and the presentation of bacterial vaginosis in adults
- Explain the recognised complications of bacterial vaginosis
- List the preferred diagnostic tests for bacterial vaginosis
- Identify treatment regimens for the effective management of bacterial vaginosis
- Describe any management of sexual partners
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have completed:
- Module 1/Sexual History (260-0004)
- Module 1/Female Genital Examination (260-0010)
- Module 10/Vaginal Discharge (260-0117)
This session begins by describing the aetiology and clinical presentation of BV.
Treatment using recommended and alternate regimes is then discussed.
Finally, the health promotion principles needed for the effective management of BV are addressed and complications are explained.
