  • Describe Gram staining
  • List common pathogen-causing disease on the ICU
  • Understand the basic antibiotic treatment of infections in the ICU

Infection is a common reason for hospital admission, and can be complicated by septic shock requiring ICU care. Knowledge of common causative organisms and tailored antibiotic therapy is imperative. This session covers:

Gram stain
Common causes of infections:

  • Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP)
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Meningitis
  • Intra-abdominal sepsis
  • Endocarditis
