Successful Diagnosis of Radiographic Images course for Dental Practitioners
Dentists should ensure that they achieve accurate and consistent radiological diagnoses. This includes optimising radiograph production, recognising the issues that can hinder successful film interpretation and identifying the more common oral abnormalities, other than caries and periodontal disease.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- describe a technique that will allow accurate and consistent diagnosis of radiographs
- outline the features that might alert the viewer that there is an abnormality
- describe what might be seen in the more common abnormalities
Successful radiological examinations help establish a diagnosis, determine the prognosis and assist the dental practitioner in recommending an optimal treatment plan.
Before commencing this session you should know:
- appropriate imaging examination for a patient selection
- criteria for radiographic examination
- successful radiographic techniques
Fiona Carmichael qualified from Glasgow University in 1984. She obtained her FDS in 1988. After a spending some time as a lecturer in oral surgery, she started training in dental and maxillofacial radiology. She completed her training at Leeds Dental Insitute having obtained the DDR from The Royal College of Radiologists in 1996 and completing an MSc in Oral Pathology.
She was made a consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology in 2000 at Leeds. She has been involved in previous teaching modules for the Royal College of Radiologists.
